Since 1997, the sport of cyclocross in North Carolina has been a pillar of the cycling season. North Carolina is now recognized as one of the nation's hotbeds for cyclocross. The NC Cyclo-Cross season begins in October and runs through December. The North Carolina Cyclo-Cross Series is the premier series in the state. The season features the NC/SC USAC Regional Cyclo-Cross Championships and the UCI North Carolina Grand Prix. In 2005, the North Carolina Cyclocross made a big step towards hosting "big time" racing as it held the North Carolina Grand Prix, the first UCI-sanctioned cyclo-cross race south of the Nation's capitol.
In 2024 the NCGP will celebrate its 19th year at Jackson Park in Hendersonville, NC. North Carolina Cyclo-Cross also brought what has been called "the best nationals ever" to life by hosting the 2016 USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate with the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission and a whole host of dedicated volunteers and supporters
Founded by Tim Hopkin, the first NCCX season featured 14 races and between 18-77 racers per event, but met Tim's goal of having a place to race and compete not only for himself but others in the area. Over the years, the season has grown to an average of 12 races per season with categories for beginners, juniors, masters, and elites alike. Tim fills the same role he filled in 1997, as owner/promoter of the series, often working the event until it's time to jump into his own race.
The soul of cyclocross remains strong in NC, thanks to the cycling teams and racers from across the region who host, race, and support top-level racing at the grassroots level.
